Well, Alex and I spent the winter at our place here in Cape Canaveral. It was relaxing and warm!! I gave up the studio on Maine Street back in Brunswick, Maine. When we return north in April, I'll be working out of my house as part of the Points of View group, pretty excited about that. Here are some of the works I completed here in Florida that I will be bringing back north.
I'll have a couple of pieces at the Points of View Gallery (18 Pleasant Street) in their Animal House show and as usual, I'll have my studio open. I just completed View from Morse Mountain on a commission and will have it on display. The Brunswick 10 by 10 was a great event - good food, good crowd, good sales, good weather. Both my works sold in the first 15 minutes (yay!!). Here's a pic with the buyer of Maritime Workshop just before the Bowdoin Common Hour sold. A big, big Thank You to Mary Becker Weiss for the photos and her support of the whole 10 by 10 event.
The Points of View Artists group has welcomed me into their fold. They are a vibrant team of artists working for their community and to better their own art. It will be fun. The next POV show coming in October at 18 Pleasant Street is "Animal House," for which I have painted Little Charmer, a work in acrylic focusing on a little guy we saw down at Faneuil Hall. It was making out quite well with the tourists and visitors. The 10 by 10 show is coming up Friday 5pm to 8pm. We are hanging it Thursday just ahead of the previews Thursday 5pm to 8pm and Friday noon to 3pm. If you can't wait, the preview is online.Joe Godleskihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07447521736129035024noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1462206949618570897.post-32511442035434625802013-08-25T11:41:00.001-04:002013-08-25T11:41:34.574-04:0010 by 10s

Yesterday was dropoff day for this year's Brunswick 10 by 10 show. The variety and quality of the art keeps getting better each year. Alex and I worked a table together and watched how the Arts Are Elementary committee and Points of View folk made the whole process work, very organized and efficient. Shown here are two more 10 by 10s, both oil on canvas panel - Bowdoin Common Hour (a scene at a Bowdoin Common Hour called Museum Pieces in 2010), going into this year's show and Cordwood (a scene at Pinelands) on the shelf for next year's show (unless it finds a home before then).
What a great surprise and honor!! The "Maritime Workshop" was selected as the poster / postcard / publicity image for the 2013 Arts are Elementary 10 by 10 benefit show. The show and sale is Friday, September 27th, 5 to 8pm. It's always a fun time with great eats. The on-line preview is set to kick off September 4th.
About "Maritime Workshop," at the Maine Maritime Museum in Bath, I came across the boat workshop with its windows open. For me, workshops in use have an appealing mix of order and disorder. In the maritime workshop, the array of boats, objects and surfaces coupled with the light streaming in form an as-found Midcoast narrative. So, I took a quick picture and then painted it. A friend of mine later told me that her husband apprenticed in that workshop - pretty cool, aye.Joe Godleskihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07447521736129035024noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1462206949618570897.post-83412113106428290212013-07-11T20:50:00.000-04:002013-07-11T20:50:45.629-04:00Maritime Workshop and Wolfe's Neck

Two recent works on canvas panel were done to a small scale: "Maritime Workshop" 10 inch by 10 inch for the upcoming 10 by 10 show and "Wolfe's Neck" 5 inch by 7 inch. The 5 X 7 was the smallest I've ever done and was fun and quick. That view on the "beach" at Wolfe's Neck is always a striking one.
The crowds have been steady and the weather has cooperated most excellently. For the June Art Walk, my works were in two venues - The Points of View Gallery on Pleasant Street - "Mainly Maine" a two person show with Ed Morton - and my studio on 98 Maine Street. A big thank you to the Points of View artists for their support, help and feedback for the "Mainly Maine" show, and particularly to Ed and Betty Morton and Bonnie Dickey. The "Mainly Maine" reception during the Art Walk was quite enjoyable and the show will be up through June. My better half, Alex, handled "gallerist" duties at the studio on Maine Street during the June Art Walk. The just-finished "Bowdoin" 10 inch X 10 inch drew some attention. It was painted from a snapshot I took during the Bowdoin Common Hour - Museum Pieces in 2010. Alex also advised me that fielding comments regarding the 300 plus (1974 - 2011) "Art in America" installation / pile of magazines was a bit vexing. "Looks like a Mayan temple design." Hmmm, what to do with the "Art in America"s for the July Art Walk (if they don't sell first)?Joe Godleskihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07447521736129035024noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1462206949618570897.post-77998852247617348732013-04-15T20:44:00.000-04:002013-04-15T20:44:30.543-04:00Back to Work

After this extended winter, it's time to get back into the studio with increased frequency and focus. The Brunswick Art Walk season is coming up and I'll also be part of a two person show with Ed Morton at Points of View this June. Time to get busy. And then there's the Life Form drawing sessions at Centre Street Gallery in Bath on Sundays. What a great space and nice folk. Some of my latest work done over the winter is shown with this post.
"Seawall Beach" is the postcard work for the upcoming show of my works at Bowdoin College, Smith Union Lamarche Gallery. The show will be up from November 1st to November 19th. A reception will be held Friday November 2nd, from 5:00pm to 6:30pm. LaMarche Gallery is an interesting space and I am looking forward to hanging my works there. "Blue Shirts" was the postcard work for the Thornton Oaks show of my works that opened September 20th and will be taken down October 22nd. The opening reception for that show required that the artist, me, give a talk about my work. That was fairly nerve-wracking but the reception, food and conversation that followed were most enjoyable. Thornton Oaks is a very gracious and capable host. Thanks to all who attended and especially to Deanna Baxter and Marlise Swartz of Thornton Oaks who really made it work. Alex and I returned to Brunswick Maine from a week at the Chautauqua Institution in upstate NY exhausted and energized. With the Brunswick 10by10 and a couple of one person shows coming up (more on that in upcoming posts) along with a commission to finish, I got busy in the studio. The commission was "Joshua" and it's now on the wall in the office of a true Joshua Chamberlain buff. It was fun and challenging to execute what with the varying types of detail in the fore-, mid- and background from spring blossoms to chiseled stone to bike riders. Other recent compositions on a smaller scale are "Hosta Blooms" (next to a bank in Brunswick Maine) and "Pope's Folly" (as viewed from the Lubec Maine waterfront). As a footnote to the Chautauqua trip, Vanessa German's show at the Strohl Center, "American JuJu: Root and Power for a New Century" was exceptional. Her figural assemblages were magical and mesmerizing. Just before the first days of summer, Alex and I spent a week up in Lubec, on the border with Canada across from Campobello. We had not been previously north of Bar Harbor but were very taken with the beauty, peace and pace of this DownEast town. We also visited Quoddy Head State Park a number of times, and that has spoiled us for all the parks down here on the Midcoast. Quoddy Head is spectacular. Click here for an album of photos from Lubec and Quoddy Head. Lubec's restaurants were very capable. The library was welcoming and had free wi-fi. Also, the SummerKeys program, a summer music program with many visiting musicians provided a wonderful organ recital while we were there. I painted and sketched ("North Lubec" and "Pope's Folly" being examples). On my return I completed "Quoddy Head Cliffs" from my photos and sketches. I think we'll be heading back to Lubec sooner rather than later.Joe Godleskihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07447521736129035024noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1462206949618570897.post-9835974642440442142012-06-26T11:34:00.000-04:002012-06-26T11:34:53.792-04:00Plein Air - Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens

Along with 100+ other artists, I took advantage of the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens week of open admission to artists for plein air painting on the Gardens grounds. It was Memorial Day week and a few of the days were washed out but a few of the days were just fine for setting up and painting. The problem was there was just so much to choose from. I settled on a little tableau off the Steep Trail where early azaleas were in bloom. Working in acrylic and fighting the mosquitoes, on day two I completed "Early Azaleas." After the week of painting, over 70 artists submitted a work for the Gardens plein air show and the resulting show was wonderful, with a lot of good value art. My "Early Azaleas" managed to sell (yay). I forgot to take a picture of the final work (boo). The Gardens are always a great visit.Joe Godleskihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07447521736129035024noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1462206949618570897.post-51381740263565040632012-05-14T11:38:00.000-04:002012-05-14T11:38:26.088-04:00Brunswick Art Walk 2012

The 2nd Friday Art Walk season kicked off this past Friday in Brunswick with a flourish. The All Species parade organized by Spindleworks got things rolling down Maine Street with a spirited marching band leading marchers sporting innovative and smile-provoking "species-wear." (As an unintended tribute to the All Species parade, I just finished a new soft block print, Don's Piglets.) The weather held up quite nicely and Art Walkers were rewarded with an expanded Art Walk including many pop-up artists showing a wide variety of art and wares. In my new studio location in the Lincoln Building, there was a steady stream of Art Walkers enjoying the evening. Outside my studio door, Paulus Fine Furniture set up a display of extraordinarily beautiful and artful chairs, tables and stands. It was quite an entryway into my studio. Finally, major props to my studio neighbor, Connie Lundquist, who worked purposefully with Five River Arts Alliance, area businesses and artists in setting up the Art Walk for this year. Here's the two latest completed pieces. "Cushion Spurge" is a ground cover flowering plant in the poinsettia family that I found at the Boothbay Coastal Garden a couple years back. What appealed to me for the painting were the shadows and shapes combined with all the variations found in the green, yellow, black palette. On the other hand, "Muscolo" is comprised entirely of different sized and shaped triangles working to "approximate the curve" throughout the image, exploring the triangle's ability to intersect and interact. Well, I moved uptown and got my own studio on Brunswick's Maine Street in the Lincoln Building, 2nd Floor, across the hall from Connie Lundquist's studio. The space is roomier, the light (east north east) is great and the sound of traffic and street goings-on works for me.Joe Godleskihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07447521736129035024noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1462206949618570897.post-43463495363328423722012-03-26T21:11:00.000-04:002012-07-16T20:04:36.261-04:00The view from the Met Rooftop

After setting this one aside a couple of times, I finally completed the painting shown above - Met Roof Garden. It was Fourth of July weekend two years ago, and the rooftop of the Metropolitan Art Museum offered a crystal clear view of NYC over Central Park tree tops. It was also wicked hot and getting up there took some climbing as the elevator was reserved for special use. The panorama was painted from a composite of 7 photos taken as I spun slowly left to right. I think it will be a while before I try to paint so many building windows. On another note, Alex and I attended a presentation by visiting artist, Nancy Blum, at Bowdoin today. She was captivating and her work was just amazing. She works very artfully in large scale drawings, sculpture and public art. We are so glad we didn't miss her talk.Joe Godleskihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07447521736129035024noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1462206949618570897.post-80617748033486144142012-02-28T21:07:00.000-05:002012-02-28T21:07:04.818-05:00Creature Great and Small

My latest work is shown here. The "Selby Gardens Egret" was done in water-miscible oil on canvas, 12 inch by 16 inch, and was based on an egret we saw at the Selby Gardens in Sarasota, FL. The egret was doing a strange, undulating walk and did not seem at all put off by the humans strolling the garden grounds, which were quite beautiful. I took several snaps and then sketched out the painting from the reference snaps. I used a rich palette and was not bashful about applying the paint wet-on-wet. The bug called "Stranger" was done in Prismacolor and graphite pencil on paper, 20 inch by 20 inch. The bug was discovered last summer here in Maine sitting attached to the door of Alex's black car in the sun. I took a couple of snaps and gridded out one of them. Then using a limited set of Prismacolor and graphite pencils, I formed the image from multiple shape and size triangles to produce a crystalline effect. Two creatures, two different locations, approaches and results.Joe Godleskihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07447521736129035024noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1462206949618570897.post-66613897651950659162011-12-31T15:40:00.001-05:002011-12-31T16:02:05.808-05:00Camden Harbor

Alex and I find ourselves visiting up the Maine coast from time to time and Camden is one of our favorite spots. When we can, we climb up Camden Hills for the view of the harbor and surrounding seascape. It is always a wonderful vista. Well, I finally sketched out a view of the harbor from the visits and resulting photos. I painted the view on DaVinci panel in 24" by 18" format. It's such a seemingly calm, organized locale to be the backdrop for a movie such as "Peyton Place." It took up the entire area at Fort Andross in Brunswick where the Winter Farmer's Market (see below) is held. It was dizzying in scope, quantity and quality. I first became familiar with Carlo Pittore's work when I submitted "Pastor Philip" for a portrait show at the Merrymeeting Arts Center in Bowdoinham few years back, and they hung my work right next to one of Carlo Pittore's. It was a thrill. He was at the forefront of postcard art and was quite prolific, the 1000 drawings being a small fraction of his total legacy. My personal haul from the the day's event are shown in the pictures above. I am especially happy about getting one of the boxers that were up for sale. It was a good day. Last Friday night's 10 by 10 show benefitting Arts Are Elementary was really something. Brunswick merchants and restauranteurs donated an abundance of very good munchies that this chow hound "appreciated" to the max. The crowd was festive and generous. The volunteers kept everything moving smoothly. And all three of the paintings I entered were sold - November Morning, Old Pumper, Heading for Cover! So, I've been working on a couple of mountain/waterscapes, and they are shown above. The palette and detail for these were scaled back from my usual work, as a change of pace. Next show upcoming is the Yarmouth Arts Festival at Saint Bart's, October 19 - 22. I'm looking forward to the artist's reception Oct. 20, 6 - 8 pm.Joe Godleskihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07447521736129035024noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1462206949618570897.post-48031359340276644002011-09-20T20:18:00.000-04:002011-09-20T20:20:05.694-04:00Hanging Out in Portland
A little while ago, Shaun McCarthy of the Dock Fore pub in the Old Port put out a call for artists to show in his establishment and to participate in the Portland Art Walk. That led to my paintings and prints hanging in Dock Fore for the Portland First Friday Art Walk in October through to October 29th. Dock Fore is cozy joint and I think my pictures work there. Plus, it'll be fun to check out the Portland Art Walk. So, with my pictures hanging elsewhere, there's empty spaces in the Brunswick studio that need to be filled. The newly finished "Late November" will help. I had gotten such positive feedback for "November Morn" which will be in the September 30th 10 by 10 show, that I decided to paint a larger variation, and I dig painting those rocks, using a lot of wet-on-wet technique.
Here's a couple of portraits of family dogs - Foxy and Maggie. Foxy's portrait was originally a much bigger canvas but upon further review, the interesting part could be distilled down to a 10" by 10" window, and so with scissors and new stretchers, it was. Maggie's portrait is done on gessoed Elephant board, which turned out to be a much smoother medium to work with versus trying to traverse the hills and dales of canvas. I'll be using more board moving forward. On another note, the Bowdoin season has resumed. The lecture / slide presentation by Mark Wethli on his public art documented his efforts to complete a work, Civitas, for the Muskie School of Public Service. Mr. Wethli abstracted Lorenzetti's 14th century fresco, Effects of Good Government on City Life for this work. The walkthrough from idea to design to build for this project provided a behind-the-scenes insight into the soon-to-be finished work of art.Joe Godleskihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07447521736129035024noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1462206949618570897.post-85522258210302561472011-08-30T10:04:00.009-04:002011-08-30T10:55:41.289-04:00The 10 by 10 September 30th

This past Saturday morning, the check-in was held for the annual 10 by 10 show at the Curtis Memorial Library here in Brunswick. The web posting of the works submitted gives some indication of the variety and quality to be available at the show. It will be a pretty cool show, preview September 29 and 30, show September 30, 5 to 8. My third 10 by 10, "Old Pumper," is shown to the left. I also finished another work in water-based oil, "Boothbay Harbor." It's the first vertical painting I've done in a while, measuring 24" high by 8" wide. And lastly, kudos to the Thornton Oaks folks for the set up, most wonderful opening and ongoing show (until September 22, 2011) of "Community Paints."

Besides lectures, music, dance, and great weather, there was a goodly amount of art to take in. At the Strohl Art Center were three shows: 1) "Out of the Blue" on the first floor which presented works all using blue as a unifier of sorts, 2) "Abstraction in America: Forties to Sixties" on the second floor in conjunction with Albright-Knox which had a heavyweight representation of artists of the period but which left me wondering how the same works would be received today, and 3) "Bilateral Trace: Four Emerging Artists from Iran" which let us in on the recent works of four woman artists from Iran. This third show was the more adventurous and interesting of the 3. One of the artists (work "Tantalized" shown above), Hedieh Javanshir Ilchi, gave an insightful lecture later in the week outlining her accelerating artistic journey and providing shots of fellow artist Roshanak Tehrani on a trip back to Iran. The student show at the Fowler-Kellogg across from the Strohl was as outstanding as last year, with the majority of the art marked sold - always a good sign. I also took a daily figure drawing course at Chautauqua led by visiting artist Antonio Petracca which turned out to be time really well spent. "Focus on the core. Focus on the core." Alex and I motored with our out-of-town company up to Boothbay Harbor yesterday. We stopped first across the foot bridge at the Joy to the Wind gallery, and had a great discussion with Lynne Seizer, co-owner. We chatted over our recent works depicting herons (my latest 10by10 is shown above), viewed the many and varied works Lynne and Jim Seitzer have hanging and then Lynne pointed us to the Studio 53 Gallery back across the foot bridge. We got there just as Bob McKay, featured artist for the month, was opening up. This is a great space having 3 floors with 8 artists represented showing a great selection from abstract to Maine landscapes. Bob talked about his methods and techniques and then autographed a copy of his book "Percival, the Lighthouse Mouse," for our friends' grandkids. It was a very pleasant visit. As we crossed back and forth across the foot bridge, we noticed a dory in the water that was clearly the finished version of the dory being worked on in my "Harbormaster's Workshop" soft block print. Take a look and see.
